The wordless, understandable cartoons by Belgian artist Luc Vernimmen.

Luc Vernimmen is a Belgian cartoonist whose work has been awarded in the most prestigious cartoon competitions for many years. For example, this drawing was awarded first place at the World Gallery in 2014.

At first glance, it may not be clear, and his work is reminiscent of the "cinema not for everyone" that some high-minded critics like so much, but if you take a closer look and understand the artist's satirical idea, everything falls into place.

Wernimmen's artwork is, like all good cartoons, absurd, with a strong satirical base, ridiculing many of the absurdities and negative phenomena of our lives, but the artist never lapses into outright vulgarity, blackness and empty snark. Perhaps this is why the most serious newspapers and magazines queue up for them, and why Wernimmen is highly regarded by many professional cartoonists, editors and publishers.

However, the artist's path to recognition was not an easy one. He graduated from an art school in Antwerp, but at first he concentrated on wood carving, as his cartoons and drawings were of no use to anyone. Gradually he found his style, honed his skills and his understanding of the nature of humour, and to earn money he took on any creative work, such as creating digital paintings, drawing illustrations, designing logos for various brands and companies, and even such small things as designing letterheads and envelopes.

According to Vernimmen, a modern creative person has to try everything in order to find a niche where he or she does best. Nowadays, only the children of rich parents can do classical painting, because the normal income from such activities can come very quickly because of the extremely high competition, the need to find one's own corporate style, or at least the interest of clients in your work. And exhibiting your paintings on the street is something humiliating for a self-respecting artist and freelancer, similar to the artwork of street musicians in underground passages.

But it is the cartoons that are most interesting to Vernimmen. They are characterised by a unique and high quality drawing, reminiscent of classic Soviet cartoons, a subtle philosophical subtext and a clearly expressed satirical basis. Vernimmen is a master at observing and depicting the absurdities of our lives. At the same time, he does not use any inscriptions, which makes his caricatures understandable to everyone, regardless of their language skills.

He also rejected the technique of sequential, identical drawings telling a story, which was widely used by caricaturists and which Bidstrup himself did not disdain. As a result, his works are very laconic, easy to read and resemble high-quality color illustrations with a satirical slant.

Vernimmen's artworks may be more about drawing attention to a problem than making the viewer laugh, they may be more satirical than humorous, but the issues they address invariably resonate with the viewer and elicit an ironic chuckle.

Well, in fact, such a reaction to contemporary art, albeit in a less exaggerated and grotesque form, is typical of many viewers.

And the dominance of non-traditional relationships in Europe reaches the point of absurdity in certain situations.

Vernimmen also raises questions about ecology, family relationships, bringing up children, the harsh everyday life in fenced-off office boxes, where workers literally "go mad" from back-breaking work, and social inequality, where the work of many "little" people in the service sector goes unnoticed, as if they did not exist in nature.

In general, Vernimmen's work is varied and interesting, and good satire for people who think is often more interesting than the primitive humouristic shouting that is already too much on the web.
