Gerald Brom (born 1965) is an iconic figure in contemporary popular culture. His artwork includes concept artwork for the films Sleepy Hollow, Scooby-Doo, Van Helsing, covers for the cult games Doom and Diablo, and numerous illustrations for fantasy novels by some of the most famous foreign writers. Brom is one of those artists who shapes our visual representation of popular culture, and his pictures have probably been seen by many people, just not realizing which artist drew it all.
Winged Redd.
And it all started with a passion for drawing. Brom's father was a military man, constantly moving from place to place, visiting various military bases and facilities, and therefore the boy had to change schools frequently, often did not have time to make friends and was always in the position of a beginner. The hobby of painting, in which he found an outlet, helped.
Morgana Le Fay
Although he never received a professional academic education, he was self-taught, but at the age of 20 he was already considered a promising artist who compensates for his lack of refined technique with an excellent creative imagination and rich fantasy - just right for a full-time illustrator position. He got a job at TSR, drew all sorts of comics and cards for role-playing board games, and later got so good at illustrating all sorts of fiction that he wrote four fantasy novels, which he illustrated himself, and to be honest, the covers aren't the only thing that made them great, and he got the honorary title of Grand Master.
Demon Hunter
On the official website, with a good dose of irony, Brock describes his artwork as follows: "I sit day in and day out in a damp and dingy basement, eat spiders and bugs, watch crappy cheap Asian movies with mugging, and between these activities I try to come to terms with my own demons in my head, for which I write books and draw illustrations for them".
Crumpus
Brom's work is quite dark, quite in keeping with the image he has invented, though interesting. He often writes on behalf of a "bad guy", a negative character, and often quite creepy, for example, the Christmas demon Krampus, the prototype of the current Santa Claus. He differs radically from the usual Santa, collecting naughty children in a sack and drowning them in the river - in general, an artistic retelling of a terrible old fairy tale, for which the Brothers Grimm were so famous, only in the spirit of dark fantasy.
Lion's Head
Perhaps the main feature of Brom is the fact that he is both a writer and an artist, so the images are very convincing, you can see how the author himself represents his characters, and this is very rare, yet classic illustrators, drawing pictures for other people's books, can not always accurately reflect the intent of the writer.
Dark Elf
The success of Brom's books allowed him to get artwork in the famous Blizzard studio, where he created concept art for Diablo 3. So here rich imagination and specialization on dark fantasy came in handy just in time.
Demoness
Brom is an artist of a new formation, who no longer stands with an easel, trying to capture the next landscape, is not looking for his own way in art, embarking on the most bizarre creative experiments, which often do not resonate with the audience, and despite his advanced age is aware of all the latest trends in popular culture. Moreover, he himself defines it, and this is worth a lot, because concept art for Diablo 3 will be seen and appreciated by millions of viewers, and isn't the main task of any creator to bring his art to as many viewers as possible?
