Strange and not always decent images in paintings in the style of magical realism by artist Albin Brunovsky.

Albin Brunovsky (1935-1997) was a famous Slovak artist who created paintings in the style of magical realism and surrealism, where fantasy and reality are closely intertwined, man is an integral part of nature, and unimaginable images, often frightening and strange, but no less interesting from this point of view neighbor with completely realistic landscapes.

The glory of confused dreams

Brunovsky's works are characterized by excellent detailing, so you can look at them for a long time and always find something new, and a magnifying glass will be very useful here. The artist was not lazy to carefully draw every twig, every element of the landscape, here his drawings are partly reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth's hyperrealistic creations, when detailing is at the heart of the creative approach and determines the overall impression of them.

Albin from childhood was characterized by an irrepressible imagination, which he tried to express in his drawings. Teachers and parents at first perplexed and sometimes scolded - let him better draw the usual houses and dad and mom, but gradually reconciled, especially as Albin's drawings became more and more perfect. He grew up and firmly decided to connect his life with painting, so he entered the Higher School of Fine Arts in Bratislava. After graduating from it, he got a job as a theater artist, drew scenery, curtains and posters for performances, but felt that the full extent of this work does not give him to open up, it was more of a way to earn money, rather than an opportunity to express himself in creativity.

However, Brunovsky sought his own way in art, tried to prove himself in different techniques, and gradually settled on etchings, i.e. engravings on metal. Strange as it may seem, this seemingly outdated form of art, which was especially popular in the 19th century, often due to the imperfections of the technology of the time, which did not allow printing full-fledged photographs in newspapers and magazines, found a second life in Brunovsky's creative rethinking.

Brunovsky's etchings have interested many lovers of quality art graphics because of their mastery of drawing and the artist's ability to find non-standard techniques in already familiar subjects on biblical and historical themes.

In 1965 he received the prestigious Cyprian Mayernik Prize, and his work has been exhibited all over the world. It was time for real recognition, and well deserved.

Brunovsky worked almost all his life at the Bratislava High School of Fine Arts, where he was invited to teach only five years after graduation. However, he did not forget about creativity, he managed to draw illustrations for more than 100 books, some of which have become real classics, created sketches of banknotes, postage stamps, wood engravings, works in the techniques of dry needle and mezzo tinto. In other words, Brunovsky can be called a true multi-tasker, who can work with all materials and in different techniques and was constantly in creative search.

Sunny morning

Art historians refer many of Brunovsky's artworks to the style of late surrealism. They always leave room for reflection and assumptions, like a window into a strange but attractive world whose laws are limited only by the artist's imagination.

The illustrator's muse

Brunovsky willingly used references to various religious beliefs and philosophical doctrines, his paintings are somewhat eclectic, containing references to the art of the past, only carefully reworked with his creative vision and boundless imagination. His favorite themes are sin and innocence, femininity, folk art, harmony of man and nature, which have received a new embodiment in his works.
