Josef Kote (born 1964) is an Albanian artist whose work has deservedly attracted the attention of painting enthusiasts around the world. His paintings are a charming mix of special techniques and artistic methods, which makes it seem that he paints with watercolors, although in fact his paintings are painted with traditional oil paints.

Oils are notoriously dense, making watercolor transparency and lightness very difficult to achieve. But Josef succeeds brilliantly, his paintings are reminiscent of the best Impressionist works.

He also paints with broad strokes, masterfully mastichin, because of which Kote's works, although somewhere and lose in detailing and drawing, but differ bright, saturated colors and complex relief texture.

Perhaps it is because of this choice of techniques and tools that Kote prefers to paint landscapes and portraits of charming girls, where the overall mood of the painting is more important than some small details and exquisite composition.

When creating portraits, Kote painstakingly paints the main image in the center, but leaves without any rendering of the background, which is usually a white space with colored spots. This technique allows to create a proper mood in the paintings, to focus on the main thing, to omit some small details that would only distract from the main image. His paintings surprisingly combine realistic images and abstract backgrounds, but this is their special charm.

Kote skillfully combines figurative and abstract painting in landscapes, where abstract elements become not only a background, but also a part of the picture, determining the general idea of the artist.

Thanks to them, the landscapes acquire a certain understatement, they can be solved, trying to understand what exactly the artist meant, but at the same time they do not scare off conservative lovers of painting by their incomprehensibility and lack of an intelligible image.

Like all Impressionists, Kote pays particular attention to light, which he depicts masterfully. He writes of it: “light is something intriguing to me and an endless field for experimentation. In every painting I try to find a new lighting solution and I consider a work to be truly successful if it succeeds”.

Kote comes from the seaside town of Vlora on the Adriatic Sea. A paradisiacal place, one of Albania's main resorts, it's not surprising that his love of the sea and spectacular views began to manifest itself in his childhood. When you see beauty every day, a creative person wants to capture it, so Joseph took up painting.

As a teenager, he had already decided on his future profession and entered the most prestigious National Lyceum of Arts in Albania. After graduation he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, and only in 1988 he received the coveted diploma. He got a job as a stage designer in his hometown, created sets for the plays played at the Petro Marko Theater, and in addition to his main work, he searched for his style in painting, realizing that this is the only way to truly succeed in art.

The framework of the theater artist was too small for him, and Kote moved to Greece, where, thanks to many years of work, he managed to become known and recognized. His paintings were saturated with light, embodied the joy of life, the very spirit of serene existence in southern European countries on the shores of the Adriatic and Mediterranean Sea.
