Igor Kiyko (1962 - present) is a Russian cartoonist, author of many wonderful caricatures and drawings. His works, in addition to a refined humor, are distinguished by a certain philosophical message, they allow you to smile and then think, which is an indicator of the true skill of the cartoonist.
Many of his cartoons combine romance and irony, the artist laughs at our everyday absurdities, the peculiarities of male and female perception, skillfully combining humor and observation, which allows him to create small humorous masterpieces.
Kiyko was born in Alma-Ata, though he first entered the Alma-Ata Architectural and Construction Institute rather than an art school, although he had loved drawing since childhood. After studying he worked as an architect, and in 1987 he decided to send his drawings to a cartoon contest. At that time humor and satire were in great esteem, the perestroika and glasnost that had begun allowed to draw and speak almost openly about our shortcomings, and censorship was no longer rampant as before.
His drawings were noticed and praised, and Igor thought that it was possible to make a living from them, especially since in the 90s there was less and less construction, and his main job paid an absolutely miserable salary. Therefore, when in 1992 he was invited as an artist to the Kazakh newspaper “Express-K”, he gladly agreed. Gradually, the artist's career began to develop by leaps and bounds, and many of his cartoons were really good.
Kiyko has participated in over 100 different cartoonist competitions and has repeatedly won prizes. International recognition also came: Kiyko was recognized in Russia, Latvia, Yugoslavia, even in Japan and the USA. He has long ago outgrown the level of a regional artist and cooperates with leading publications such as Komsomolskaya Pravda in Kazakhstan and Izvestia. He likes it in Kazakhstan and is not going to move anywhere yet, and his advanced age already disposes him to a certain permanence.
By the way, Kiyko himself assesses his work quite critically. According to him, the first black-and-white cartoons were still very immature, the humor was flat, primitive and not too professional, although there were some good things among them. Gradually he began to draw in color, gave up clouds with inscriptions in many works in favor of greater brevity, and most importantly - managed to form his own style, thanks to which the artist's works have become unmistakable.
If you see characteristic big noses and small, slightly bulging eyes on the caricatures of the characters, and the caricatures themselves are characterized by subtle irony and unconditional professionalism, you can be sure that this is the work of Igor Kiyko.
By the way, despite the stylization, the characters in his cartoons are mostly cute, the artist laughs at them, but does not focus excessive attention on any negative aspects, frankly black humor and vulgarity. This is largely a consequence of Kiyko's own internal censorship and the requirements for newspaper and magazine journalism, which are much stricter than online.
Kiyko draws on all topics: family relationships, fairy tale characters, relationships between the sexes, children and parents, the peculiarities of school life, etc. Many of his caricatures will be understandable and interesting not only to adults, but also to children.
Such a broad outlook distinguishes his cartoons from the work of many online freelancers who find their own “hobbyhorse” and stick to the same theme that somehow touches the viewers, often to the detriment of their creative development.
Kiyko creates and lives by his motto: “in every truth there is a joke” and here we can only agree with the artist - irony often acts as a lifeline in our lives, and if you take everything seriously no nerves will be enough.
