Alexander Anatolyevich Pashkov (1952 - 2011) is a famous Soviet and Russian cartoonist, a recognized master of his craft. His works are distinguished by high-quality, albeit somewhat black humor, an original view of various phenomena of our life, philosophical subtext and depth, good drawing and the absence of speech bubbles, thanks to which they are understandable to viewers around the world without translation.
Another question is that Pashkov’s work is still very national; you had to be born and live in Russia in order to fully understand some of his caricatures. However, Pashkov has a lot of universal humor.
Pashkov loved to draw since childhood, but after school, on the advice of his parents, he decided to enroll in a jewelry school, which he graduated from in 1970. It would seem that there is a reliable and profitable specialty and the possibility of additional earnings "on the side", but the desire for creativity turned out to be stronger. Therefore, unexpectedly for everyone, he got a job as a graphic artist at Central Television, drawing all sorts of decorations for TV shows.
But after a few years, he got tired of it all, he lacked creative freedom and the opportunity to realize his passion for humor. Therefore, he drew various cartoons for himself, the most successful of which he sent to the Literary Gazette. Soon Pashkov became a freelance cartoonist for this publication, and one of the founders of the famous column "The Club of 12 Chairs". Pashkov's cartoons stood out for their minimal ideological twist, rare black humor at that time, and hidden subtexts that the usual Soviet viewers very easily deciphered. And in general, the "Club of 12 Chairs" was a kind of small "corner of freedom within the limits of what is permitted" in the Soviet press, perhaps that is why it was so popular, and many readers, having bought literature, began reading it from the last, 16th page.
Many of Pashkov's characters turned out to be so recognizable and colorful that they are cramped within the framework of just one caricature; they are quite worthy of a whole series of comics, or even a separate story.
Well, really, in the 90s, didn’t we have these newly rich people with Soviet habits in everyday life, which are very difficult to eradicate in a short time?
And the irrepressible desire of some girls and women to look beautiful in any situation at any time sometimes reaches the point of absurdity.
And aren’t there such binge drinkers, who doctors have categorically forbidden to drink in the same volume, but they cannot completely give up this habit.
Well, the attraction of some art lovers to nude has become so habitual for the author when choosing topics for publications that sometimes it even prevents him from posting quality articles without the notorious nude, since few people read them anyway.
Pashkov also laughs at national habits, but he does it very organically and ethically, without wanting to offend anyone.
Many of Pashkov's caricatures are absurd in a good way, and at the same time make you think about our lives. Pashkov always followed the best traditions of Soviet caricaturists, according to which the main thing in a drawing is the meaning, and only then the humorous basis. This allows you to avoid meaningless giggling and excessive vulgarity, his works are funny, but not stupid, and this is what distinguishes the work of a venerable master from ordinary humorous freelance, of which, unfortunately, there is too much on the Internet.
It is therefore not surprising that Pashkov has been repeatedly awarded at major cartoonist competitions, for example, he received the Golden Calf award, considered one of the most prestigious in Russia.
Although many of the artist's cartoons were drawn several decades ago, they have not lost their relevance and seem very modern. There is no doubt that this will be the case for a long time, since truly high-quality humor is timeless and will always be in demand.
