Ironic paintings by Mikhail Vachaev about our life, laced with irony and the grotesque

Mikhail Vachaev is a Yekaterinburg artist with his own distinctive style that distinguishes him from the works of other painters. He works in different directions - portrait, landscape, fantastical illustration and even surrealism, but he is especially successful in grotesque realism. His paintings are about our reality, not always cheerful, sometimes even gloomy, especially from the artist's own presentation - he skillfully emphasizes the main thing, does not spray on unnecessary details, but at the same time his paintings do not seem too schematic, and Vachaev's creative idea is reflected perfectly.

A new generation

Vachaev often uses muted, grayish colors, which partly relates his paintings to the works of classical academists, but that is where the similarity ends. Instead of heroes of ancient Greek myths, all sorts of naiads and goddesses - characters of our days, often executed in a satirical manner.

Black square

For example, an overly fashionable girl with botoxed lips, a black fur coat, a red borset and a phone, clearly looking for adventures on her second 90. Except that she has to get to these adventures by regular subway, and there she looks completely out of place. Who she is - a night butterfly, getting to her point late at night or just a student who decided to party in a nightclub - is unclear, but the point is not in that, but in a clear mockery of modern fashion trends that make maybe quite decent girls look so provocative and frivolous. Pay attention to the advertisements on the subway car - an obvious parody of the "tempting" offers to take out a loan and solve all your financial problems at once.

Steam locomotive

However, some of the artist's paintings are more gloomy, especially when it comes to the younger generation. Here is a boy smoking like a locomotive with new-fashioned spices, which usually cause only rejection in people of the older generation. And it is not clear what is mixed in it and how it will affect his health - we will not get a generation of skinny drug addicts in the future, living with fire, but not for long. And here Vachaev's paintings are already referred to the works of our Itinerant painters, in particular, the same Perov - satire and denunciation of the vices of society, albeit in a modern way. What time, such are the vices.

Quarantine 2020

But at the same time Vachaev leaves hope, counting on common sense and general childish carelessness to prevail over the paranoid fears of parents. For example, in the painting Quarantine 2020, dedicated to the covida epidemic and the subsequent ban on going outside unnecessarily, the boys are gathered in the street and talking quietly, pulling off their face masks and some ridiculous homemade items from a plastic five-liter container. "The digital generation" is tired of smartphones and gadgets and wants normal human communication, even in times when it is considered unacceptable.

I borrowed

There are in Vachaev's paintings and perky old ladies, ready to fight on canes for their place in line, because they are used to the fact that nothing in this life is given for nothing, and a sketch of young people who even in the street do not want to leave the cozy digital world, tucked into gadgets and plugged into their ears headphones, and a portrait of a dull guard, every day for 8-10 hours serving, as in prison, on his empty and very boring job.

Every day

Vachaev's paintings have often been exhibited at various exhibitions, and they are known and appreciated not only in his native Ekaterinburg. He graduated from the I.D. Shadra Art School and is able to work in different techniques and materials, not only with classical paints and pencils, but also to create illustrations in digital art style on a tablet or computer.

digital art by Mikhail Vachaev.

He is an artist of a new formation, who is able to accurately notice many phenomena of our modern life, and honestly, albeit not without a certain amount of irony and grotesque, reflect them in his paintings. And in the present time, this is worth a lot.
