Anders Leonard Zorn (1860-1920) was a painter from Sweden who became known far beyond the borders of his country, including Russia. His name became a kind of indicator of the quality of painting, non-trivial approach to it, because “Russian Zorn” called Serov, Korovin and other artists. Zorn's paintings were liked by both impressionists and realists, he combined a sprawling style of writing, large stroke, sharpened on the display of light, air and water, characteristic of impressionists and deep penetration into the inner world of the models in his portraits, which is closer to the best traditions of realism. For this reason, Zorn was considered one of the best artists of his time, an example to follow.

And he was also distinguished by his peculiar character and passionate desire to live to the fullest, not knowing the measure of anything, perhaps because he was so popular in Russia that he had a Russian soul - if he started to dance, he danced until he fell, drank until he drank all or fell off his feet, but also worked on conscience, with passion and desire, sparing neither himself nor the models whose portrait he painted. He earned a lot, but a lot and spent a lot, favor with his way of life was always on what. Economy, calculation and frugality - this is not about Zorn, however, he did not need it.

Summer Fun

Zorn found his work easy and relaxed, much like our wonderful artist Mikhail Vrubel, although Zorn's character was more reminiscent of Korovin - he knew how to get along and find a common language with a wide variety of people, regardless of their age and social status. He especially easily established relationships with attractive ladies and girls - they liked his manner of communication, or maybe they simply felt his incredible thirst for life and love, so they usually always reciprocated, without thinking much about the consequences. Zorn is a Casanova in painting, although unlike Gustav Klimt, his passion for women was not morbid, and he did not use the services of prostitutes. We will talk about the most life-loving artist Anders Zorn in this article.

Anders was born in the Swedish countryside, working on a farm owned by his mother's parents. His father, a local brewer, Anders hardly ever saw him, as he never officially married. He did not study well, but showed a passion for woodcarving, so his mother expected him to make a living at it.

At the age of 15 Anders began to study at the School at the Academy of Fine Arts, then at the Academy itself. There was no extra money, so he had to work to order. So he met a girl from a wealthy Jewish family Emma Lamm - she ordered him his portrait in 1881. Love erupted - Anders in his youth always had success with girls, and the young decided to get engaged, but they did not tell anyone about their plans - too much in different social positions they were in.

However, Zorn soon became known as an outstanding artist, first in Stockholm, then in London, Paris and Moscow. His work was in great demand - all aristocrats, prosperous bourgeois, socialites and monarchs wanted to have their portrait painted by Zorn. As a result, Zorn earned 15 thousand dollars a week - a huge amount of money, many such an amount could not save and for a lifetime.

Zorn was a man of self-love and with the powers that be spoke as equals. He told the King of Sweden Oscar II to remove the orders from the uniform, because according to the assurance of Zorn: “behind the bling is not visible character,” and on the words of Savva Mamontov, that it would be good to write the buttons on his robe, replied: “I am a painter, not a tailor.

And also Zorn loved to write nude women, his nudes - it is the embodiment of sensuality and voluptuousness and only a man, fierce in love can so authentically depict them. Zorn's marriage seemed strong in public, but it was said that in the vicinity of all the places where the artist settled, pretty girls and ladies gave birth to many illegitimate babies, and they were usually called Anders.

Emma Zorn accepted it and did not cause scandals. Being the wife of a successful artist is much better than being divorced, so she turned a blind eye to Zorn's antics.

Zorn died at the age of 60, having painted many paintings, and remained true to his roots to the end of his life - at heart he was an ordinary country man who was just lucky enough to become a famous artist.
