The noise of engines heard for kilometers around, the smell of soot and fuel oil. Multi-toned gray and faceless freight trains, stretching in long lines to the factories, deliver resources and catch up with depression and melancholy on everything around.
Perhaps partly there is a Germinal influence here, with workers descending into the mines, and throughout the book, there is tension and human tragedy.
